VUB BRUSSEL - Queer Mobilities
In September of 2024 I was contacted by Charlotte van Vessem and Juliana Betancur Arenas, two researchers from VUB Brussels. They are researching the impact of urbanism and mobility of the city of Brussels on queer people and where looking from someone to visualize this research.
PHASE 1
Charlotte and Juliana started gathering information by organising multiple anonymous focus groups with the target group; queer people in Brussels. During these gatherings, I functioned as a Visual Harvester by making ‘visual notes’ of the stories, experiences and confessions of these people. This was a very interesting challenge; I often had to work quite fast to be able to capture different stories at the same time, and doing this all from memory.
PHASE 2
After gathering all stories, it was Charlotte’s and Juliana’s moment to compile this into topics and data. My task was to then visualise these findings. It took some thinking and trying what would be the best way to present this research to a broader public, picturing the current situation and the outlook on the future and mixing research with art. We ended up with the following;
One big graphic novel-esque illustration that could be split into 8 parts. These 8 parts were printed on 70x80cm. The boards can be viewed separately, each depicting a different overarching topic with matching illustrations and (anonymised) quotes from the focus groups.
The boards can be placed together to create the full illustration.
This system made it possible for Charlotte and Juliana to create a big visual to use during presentations, and that is also adaptable depending on the venue or the focus of the presentation.
The first part of the research outcome and the final visual were presented during the research closing event in Les Grands Carmes in Brussels on 22/10/25.
PHASE 3
For the next phase, the final visual will be on view for a longer period of time in One Field Fallow-gallery in March of 2026. This will go along with a workshop on zine-making and envisioning queer mobility in Brussels.
For this event, the next step is making a zine with the visuals and texts on the research.
The zine will be available for sale, alongside some prints.

BRIK BRUSSEL
Window painting for the study space of BRIK in the former Bpost office, located in the city centre of Brussels. Made in april 2022. Still on display at Bpost next to Brouckere metro station (until the building will be teared down).
In 2020, BRIK commissioned a study planner for students in lockdown.
